I may update with new data extracts as they are released by Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2023). However, I have included the option of using data from previous quarters as well.
Aged care star ratings
The Department of Health and Aged Care recently released a star rating system which helps people be more informed when selecting a government-funded aged care home. The overall star rating given to each home is determined by a combination of residents’ experience, staffing, compliance and quality measures (indicators). The star ratings are published on “My Aged Care” (Australian Government, Department of Health and Aged Care 2022a), but for convenience I used the data table from the Sydney Morning Herald article “Two-Thirds of Aged Care Homes Don’t Provide Enough Care for Residents.” (Angus Thompson and Craig Butt 2022). The full details for how the star ratings are determined is in the Star Ratings Provider Manual (Australian Government, Department of Health and Aged Care 2022b). In my calculator, I used the star ratings calculated according to the manual, but before the final rounding step, to compute a percentile rank among Australian aged care homes.
How to use the calculator
Input a home’s star rating for the four sub-categories and the calculator will compute the overall star rating prior to rounding, the percentile rank of that star rating, and the overall star rating after rounding.
